Shalom friends,
|
"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." Albert Einstein
|
The last 61 years have created many problems for Israeli people. These problems created in turn new thinking that produced numerous inventions (הַמְצָאָה, hamtsaa) and innovations (חִדּוּשׁ, xidush). In this issue, we will get to know a few successful Israeli inventions that crossed borders and changed the quality of our lives.

דּוּד שֶׁמֶשׁ
Translteration: dud shemesh
Translation: solar water-heater
Due to a fuel shortage in the new state of Israel in the 1950's, the government forbad heating water between 10 p.m. and 6 p.m. This problem invoked the innovative mind of Tsvi Tabor. He considered the abundance of sunlight in Israel and the lack of gas and created an apparatus that

heats water by the energy of sun, and placed it on the roof of his home. The successful invention became commercial and many households in Israel built units called DUD SHEMESH on their roofs.
In the 1970's Israel suffered from yet another energy crisis. At this point, the solar water-heater became a must. In 1980 the Israeli Knesset passed a law requiring the installation of solar water heaters in all new homes. Nowadays, approximately 95% of Israeli homes use a solar water heater.
טַפְטֶפֶת
Translteration: taftefet
Translation: Drip irrigation, trickle irrigation, micro-irrigation
Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, believed that the sparsely populated and barren Negev desert offered a great opportunity for settling
|
|
the Jews. He had a vision of making the Negev desert bloom. One of the major obstacles, however, was the shortage of water in the desert.
In the 1960's, an Israeli Engineer, Simcha Blass, discovered that trees grow better next to a sparse yet localized source of water. He invented simple water drippers that were later developed in collaboration with the Netafim Company in Kibutz Chasterim. The breakthrough was that instead of releasing water through tiny holes, blocked easily by tiny particles, water was released through larger and longer plastic passageways.
By using this method of irrigation, the use of water is minimized and the land is fertilized by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants, either onto the soil surface or directly onto the area of the root, through a network of valves, pipes, tubing, and emitters.
Today, the drip irrigation method is used all over the world.
עֻזִּי
Translteration: Uzi
Translation: Uzi submachine gun
The Uzi was first designed by Uziel Gal in the 1940's. Uziel Gal was born as Gotthard Glass to a Jewish family in Germany. When the Nazis came to power in 1933, his parents sent him to England. In 1936 he moved to
|
|
Kibbutz Yagur in Israel (under the British mandate at that time).
Uzi Gal began designing the Uzi submachine gun in 1948, shortly after the Israeli War of Independence. In 1951 it was officially adopted by the Israeli Defense Forces and was called "Uzi" after its creator (Uzi is a nickname for Uziel). Uzi Gal did not want the weapon to be named after him, but his request was ignored.
The Uzi and its variants are some of the most popular and recognizable submachine guns in the world. It has been sold to more than 90 countries worldwide and has appeared in many films, TV series, music videos, and video games.
עַגְבָנִיּוֹת שֶׁרִי
Translteration: agvanyot sheri
Translation: cherry tomatoes
Looking for a healthy TV snack, a research team from the Agriculture Faculty of the Hebrew University in Rechovot, developed a smaller garden
|
|
variety of tomato. This kind of tomato was first marketed in the early 1990's and was called TV tomatoes (עגבניות טלויזיה, agvanyot televizya). Due to the resemblance of these tomatoes to cherries, they were eventually called cherry tomatoes.
בַּמְבָּה
Translteration: bamba
Translation: A peanut butter-flavored puffed corn snack
Bamba is one of the leading snack foods produced and sold in Israel. It has been marketed since 1963 with no decline in sales.

TAKI טַאקִי
Taki is a card game which is an expansion of Crazy Eights. It was developed by an Israeli called Haim Shafir. Since it was published in 1983, it became very popular all around the world. The purpose of the game is to get rid of all your cards by dropping cards that are of the same color or figure as the previous card. Special cards may change the direction of play, skip a player's turn and make other players draw cards. Others change the color or allow a player to discard more than one card at a time.

הֶחְסֵן נַיָּד, דִּיסְקוֹן
Translteration: Hexsen Nayad, diskon (Most people in Israel use the generic name DiskOnKey and don't even know that this wonderful Israeli invention has a Hebrew name.)
Translation: DiskOnKey®, JumpDrive, stick, USB flash drive
The DiskOnKey is a registered trademark of a USB drive, flash drive, Plug and Play compact mobile device that uses flash memory and is light enough to carry on a key chain. This product was first created by the Israeli company M-System.

ICQ - אֲנִי מְחַפֵּשׂ אוֹתְךָ
Translteration: any mexapes otxa
Translation: I Seek You
ICQ is an instant messaging computer program, which was first developed by five Israelis from the Mirabilis Company. They recognized that many people were online accessing the
|
|
Internet through a non-UNIX operating system, and that there was no software that enabled an immediate connection between them. They developed the technology for locating and connecting the users of the Windows operating system. The technology Mirabilis developed for ICQ was distributed free of charge. In 1998, AOL acquired Mirabilis for $407 million. At the time, this was the highest price ever paid to purchase an Israeli technology company.
גְּלוּלַת וִידֵאוֹ
Translteration: glulat vide'o
Translation: PillCam®
The following invention is in the medical field and was developed to make the internal checkup of the intestine easier. Most of us are familiar with the examination of the colon
|
|
using a colonoscope (flexible tube inserted into the body that allows doctors to view the interior of the colon). This examination, however, is not very pleasant. Therefore, the Israeli company Given Imaging Ltd invented the PillCam Colon Video Capsule Endoscope.
They inserted a camera (and a source of light) into a pill that is swallowed by the examinee. When the person is doing his or her daily routine, the video pill moves painlessly down the colon and photographs its insides. The color video images are transmitted, via sensors secured to the abdomen and are later analyzed by the physician.

Shalom Hebrewonline Team,
It is my pleasure to acknowledge receipt of your monthly newsletters which is very rich in the Jews news.
While am sharing with you the remembrance of the Haulocust, it has not been possible from my part to forget what I saw when I visited Yad Vashem Museum. I will not forget the picture of the Jews, child, girl, woman and man, being herded to the Gas chambers by people who were more of sub human than the Jews they thought were sub human!!
these are some of the horrific acts that if God was not and is not with Israelis todate, then no human being can overcome on his/her own. If one witnesses what actually took place during the holocaust, then all human nature should repent and change completely so that such scenes do not and should not be allowed to occur again! Never!!!
May God continue to shield you from the fire of the enemy and bless all the Jews and Israel!!!
